Tech Jobs = Big Bucks for Women

I came across a Forbes article today on the best paying jobs for women in 2011 (US data). Look what caught me by surprise:

I would never have expected 3 of the 10 jobs to be in the technology field! What’s more surprising is that these positions had the highest earnings as a percentage of men’s earnings. More than doctors, lawyers, and even female CEOs!

According to the article, the lower pay gap in these jobs is due to women working for younger tech companies with “less entrenched male-dominated cultures.” Really? Do a quick Google search for computer programmers and I’m pretty sure you’ll see image after image of ‘male-dominated’ environments. All kidding aside, I know what they mean. The new generation of startup founders (predominantly Gen Y) believe more in gender equality than say their parents generation did.

Too bad the % of women in these jobs is so low. At least we can rule out the theory that salary is what’s preventing women from becoming technophiles.
